What is The Fertility Counselling Service (ni)?

Our service has been available to patients in Northern Ireland since 1988. It is for anyone undergoing fertility investigations or treatments or who have recently undergone treatment, whether it was successful or not. It is a service for those who feel they would like to talk through their thoughts, emotions or problems with an experienced counsellor.

The HFEA

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority recognises the importance of counselling. It states that all patients seeking licensed treatment or storing of their eggs / sperm / embryos must be given suitable opportunity to receive counselling.

Fertility Counsellors are professionally trained and work in accordance with the standards and ethics of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). They are additionally accredited by the British Infertility Counselling Association (BICA)

Confidentiality

Respecting your confidentiality is central to our practice. Your confidentiality will be protected unless you wish us to share information with others or there is a risk to a child or adult’s safety.

Remember - talking to a Fertility Counsellor is about taking positive steps to take care of yourself.

Funding

The FCS(ni) is funded through an arrangement with the Regional Fertility Centre (RFC). For patients of the RFC, counselling is free.

Additional support is received from the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Saftey and also from the Big Lottery, Awards for All. We are grateful to each of these organisations for the range of their support.

There may be occasions when the FCS(ni) has to make a charge for counselling. Please speak with one of the counsellors about this.
